At Joy Lane Primary School, we are committed to educating our children about environmental concerns and the importance of living sustainably. We recognise our responsibility to ensure that pupils have the necessary skills and knowledge to understand environmental concerns so that they can apply this to their lives and adopt an eco-friendly lifestyle. This all features across our curriculum in key Geography units, reading assemblies and other assemblies, as well as themed or charity days, such as Walk for Water and Earth day.

Each new academic year, each class votes for an Eco Rep, who will then attend meetings across the year with the intention of driving and embedding more eco-friendly projects and approaches. 

We are fortunate to have a small woodland, which is teeming with wildlife, and allows our children to attend regular Forest School sessions. Our school grounds also include a large field and ample outdoor spaces, which supports our pupils in celebrating their affinity with nature with opportunities for outdoor learning.

We host an after school Gardening Club for those who wish to be more green-fingered, and Plogging, the Swedich concept of jogging and picking up litter. Each classroom has a welly box so we are always ready to embrace our learning in the outdoors.

Our Eco Reps drive and support whole school projects, as well as getting involved in the wider community: 

• Advertising and running the pre-loved Christmas Jumper Sale alongside the Friends of Joy Lane
• Presenting assemblies on battery recycling and providing battery boxes for all children
• Creating a video to ask parents for OPAL Play donations
• Taking part in the Big Garden Birdwatch with the residents of Harrier Lodge Care Home
